How to Launch Your Very Own Podcast: Tips & Tricks Part 1

Okiki Podcast- Tips & Trick Part 1.jpg

This September, I am launching my first ever podcast. The Okiki Podcast: Making Inspirational People known.

Here's some background on the name Okiki. If you haven't followed my story before, my name is Fiyin Obayan, and I am a Nigerian-Canadian. I was born in Nigeria, and I have lived in Canada since I was five years old.

The language of the cultural groups that my parents trace from is Yoruba and Igbo.

Okiki is a Yoruba word, and it means to make something known and famous.

So I wanted to make a podcast that showcases people who inspire me. Hence the tagline "make inspirational people known."

In the next couple of months, you will be introduced to some of these remarkable individuals who have inspired me as a business owner. For now, I wanted to give you some practical tools and tips if you too wanted to start your very own podcast.

Recording Equipment and Interviews

If you check through YouTube, you will find advice from a plethora of podcasters with equipment prices that range from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars.

The most important thing is that you have excellent and clear audio so listeners will want to tune in and stay engaged with the show.

For my shows so far, for long-distance interviews, I have been using the Zoom H1n Handy Recorder. I hold it up to my mouth as I am interviewing the guests, and I can achieve clear audio.

In-Person Interviews

If you are interviewing in-person, I suggest you use the Zoom H5 Digital Multitrack Recorder. I would also get lavalier mics that you and your guests can wear, and you can connect then to the H5 for more accurate audio.

Software for long-distance interviews:

If you have managed to find a great guest for your show who lives in a completely different location from you, the discussion can still be successful.

You can record your interviews live through videoconferencing software and apps like the following:

  • Google Hangouts

  • Skype

  • Zoom

and many more.

As long as you can record your interview and get audio and video from it, you are ready to have interview podcast episodes.

Editing Programs

If you have a Mac computer or Ipad, I suggest you use their free program Garage Band. It will get the job done, and it is usually already installed with the device.

On a PC, there are many apps you can use, but an excellent app to use is Audacity.

Streaming Platforms

You can stream your podcast on several platforms, either directly on using an aggregator. Here is a small list of the many available streaming services:

  • Apple Podcast

  • Sticher

  • SoundCloud

  • Anchor.fm

  • Blubrry

  • Spotify
